And now for something completely different... the little
brother of the big beast —
the
B. E. S. T.
MicroSequencer, a compact, analog-style hardware step
sequencer with pattern storage. This project is in the
prototype stage at the moment, with the final PCB design in the works. The picture on the right is a design mockup of what the final front may look like.
We are considering creating two different designs, a
standard size module for modular synthesizers, and a
standalone box (with a different jack placement
than shown here).
The front panel is divided into two main
sections:
SETUP (top half)
and
RUN (bottom half). The controls are grouped logically in each section, with some knobs having dual functions;
they're placed in the middle, right on the double line.
THE SETUP SECTION
- SELECT STEP: Press the button to
cycle through step one to eighth to get to the step you wish to edit. The current step is shown on the display.
- TUNE: Change the pitch on the selected step. Use the COARSE and FINE switch on the right to
change the tuning mode. COARSE changes the pitch a semitone up and down, while FINE gives a smooth, gradual pitch change.
- PATTERN SAVE/LOAD: These two
pushbuttons let you save a pattern to the selected
memory location, and load a stored pattern from
memory. Control Voltage (CV) and notelength values
are stored.
Use the PATTERN NO. knob below to select the
memory location to store the pattern to or read from. Eight
different patterns can be stored.
- NOTELENGTH: Select the notelength
for the current step. Choose between whole-, half-, quarter-, eighth-,
sixteenth- and thirtysecondth notes.
THE MIDDLE/"DUAL" SECTION
- PATTERN NO./MAX STEPS: In SETUP
mode, this knob lets you specify the memory
location to store a pattern to, as explained above. In RUN mode, it sets the maximum number of steps
the sequencer cycles through. It works in all DIRECTION modes.
- SETUP/RUN: This switch enables either the SETUP or RUN mode.
- DIRECTION: Switches step direction between FORWARD, REVERSE, PENDULUM and RANDOM.
THE RUN SECTION
- INT/EXT CLOCK: Switch between
internal and external clock. The external clock
signal is received through the EXT CLOCK
IN jack input below.
- INT CLOCK SPEED: Adjusts the
speed of the internal clock.
- START/STOP: Starts or stops the sequencer.
- EXT CLOCK IN: Jack input for
external clock pulse.
- TRIG OUT and CV OUT: Jack outputs for
trigger signal and Control Voltage.
- START/STOP TRIG IN: Jack input
for external pulse to start or
stop the sequencer.
